Grounding practice: get out of your head

The practice below helps you get into the body. To start registering the full body, as many people can feel overwhelmed when they disconnect from the body in order to live up to the expectations of the brain.


This is great for anyone recovering from burnout, or in the midst of it.


Everyday, create a short practice to to trace the entire surface area of your skin. Touch every part of your body. It doesn’t have to take long, and it can be as systematic in approach as you wish, or it may change daily. I would suggest anywhere between 4 to 10 mins, but it’s also a great way to pamper yourself and take your time to feel.


The approach is soft, gentle, earthy, solid, not putting pressure or stroking too lightly. It will help you start building a daily kinesthetic registration of your literal physical boundaries. Your body. Where you begin, and end physically.


As you are doing it, tune into the literal sensations in the body without interpretation. What do you feel? Observe. You may feel emotions, have thoughts, distractions or resistance – this is normal. Bring the awareness back to your breath, slow and deep, and the sensations you experience internally and on the skin.


If you like, it can be in the shower to make it easier, or while putting on body lotion. This is a practice to be done alone, not with a partner.



Have fun on your exploration, for some women it can be a little confronting, but awareness is the first step to freedom. Don’t forget to share your insights and experiences with me.
